Kobe
By: Roxanne Blake
Blessed with a melodic gift that translates the voice of the streets, Kobe is an R&B singer/writer and hook genius and although he considers himself a rookie in the game, he’s no stranger to the radio airwaves. Kobe is the mastermind behind the catchy hook on the street anthem “Still Kill” performed by Akon on 50 Cents’ Curtis Album. His soulful voice can be heard on Jim Jones’ song “Love Me No More”, a tune that proves Kobe’s talent is undeniable and vocals, contagious. He talks with Swagg to tell us how he does it.
Swagg: How did the collaboration with Jim Jones “Love Me No More” come together?
Kobe: DJ Khalil produced beat and I wrote the hook. He heard the track liked it and kept me on the hook, he just jumped on it and the rest is history. DJ Khalil and I are pretty much a team, he does the beat and I do the hook then we present it to the world. Usually there’s no relationships involved, people hear our music and gravitate to it.
Swagg: Who else have you wrote music for?
Kobe: I wrote the “Still Kill” hook for Akon on the 50’s Curtis Album and R&B songs for both Tyra Banks and JLo. I’m working on a Hook for Fabulous right now for his up coming album.
Swagg: Tell me about your Mixtape that’s on the streets.
Kobe: I got a mix tape on the streets right now. The album features all original music on it with a new flavor, something that has never hit the streets before. Basically it’s my story, my emotions, put my way.
Swagg: What separates your music from other R&B Singers?
Kobe: It’s my Swagg and how I approach the beat and how I present my view on life.
I’m a rookie in the sense that the world doesn’t know who I am yet, while other R&B singers bring one flavor, Kobe brings you a whole new look on life.
Swagg: How does the Magic Happen in the Studio? How do you come up with those crazy hooks?
Kobe: I go in the booth with a hot beat and just freestyle. I turn off the light, go off of the emotion and paint a picture, do the melody, no pen and pad and go off of what I’m feeling. Then I come out and write the words to it.
There you have a behind the scenes look at mega star in the making, Kobe. Whether you’re looking for the next street anthem or a tune to bang in the club, check his Swagg and look out for more big things on the way because he’s on his own wave length and in this rap game, originality is exactly what we need. Stay tuned, check ya nose and go listen to Kobe.
